What defines the difference between success vs failure? Webster’s dictionary or us?
For years I measured success in metrics. How much money I would need to make, my grade point average, my career position (as far as seniority level), you get the point. I believe success is often equated to the monetary aspects of life (house, cars, money, etc.) It wasn’t until I entered college I gained a new mindset and started to think differently. My years of being in the work force also played a major role. Kudos to that, because my past experiences helped to open my eyes to what success truly meant for me. Now you see, success is another one of those words that’s objective. Everyone has their own standards and definitions accordingly. For some it changes. For some the criteria is set. Some learn what is over time and others know what it is from the get-go. I was in the category of learning what success meant to me. It took years of learning and listening to my heart. It took detaching myself from what is typically defined as success to find my meaning of the word.
It's the Happiness, Freedom, and peace for me!
I quickly learned that money is not the end all be all. It didn’t serve as a long term motivation for me. Sure, it worked for a while in my younger years but true success for me had nothing to do with money. If I am being honest, I wouldn’t care one bit about money if it weren’t needed to survive. Life is so expensive!! I know we could all relate to that statement. Instead I wanted the freedom to do what I pleased. I wanted to be happy. I wanted peace of mind and spirit. Frankly, success for me is doing what makes me happy and heading towards the life I want to live. (Manifestation is key)
Failure for me is nothing but an experience. I look at it as a learning process. In the past I looked at failure as all my short comings towards a goal I initially set in place. Did I truly “fail”? Not unless I gave up. Giving up is the only time the word failure permits. It’s an example of what not do to the for the next time. How to do something better. It signifies becoming one step closer to what the goal is.
So, for me, I define what failure is just as how I get to define what success looks like. A mindset is what it is. The next time you think you are “failing” remember that you get to define what failure means, same as you have the opportunity to change the situation.
